In June 1942, the Japanese tried to take Midway and the Aleutians were these attempts to invade U.S. territory.

In Hawaii, there was a fear of invasion, but in vain.

That was the original purpose - to attack the Japanese fleet on a large number of Imperial Marines who were at the invading force led. It is not clear, at least, why the Japanese admiral decided to follow the air campaign with the amphibious landing was planned.
